The Five Great Shinobi Countries (忍び五大国, Shinobi Godaikoku, English TV: Five Great Shinobi Nations) are the five largest countries and the main focus of the Naruto series. These countries are led by governmental leaders, known as the daimyō, who are in charge of ruling their individual nations.
Has huge overseas investments, both government and private, in the Commonwealth. When Britain joined the (later succeeded by the EU) in 1973, the trade privileges of member countries began to be reduced. Now Commonwealth members have trade agreements with the EU. These governments a lawmaking body (often called the legislative council); an executive body (called the executive council), which with the governor is the executive authority; and an independent judiciary. At first government posts are appointive, but an increasing elected element is introduced, as constitutions are altered, until elected officials are made wholly responsible for local affairs. After a colony achieves internal self-government, its legislature may apply to the British Parliament for complete independence. It then decides whether to remain in the Commonwealth.

Countries
Countries operate as separate political entities and are presumably allmonarchies, ruled by daimyō who stand equally in rank with the Hidden Villages'Kage. The Naruto world is similar to feudal Japan in many aspects; thosecountries maintain balance between themselves through nothing but power.Treaties are periodically signed, but they are generally not worth much morethan the paper they are written on.
The Land of Fire
The Land of Fire is one of the largest and mostpowerful countries in the series, and the home of the main characters of theseries. Its government leader is the Fire Daimyō. The Land of Fire was thefirst country to adopt a ninja village, Konohagakure, a custom other countrieswould soon adopt. The Land of Fire is appropriately oriented towards theelement of fire, typically having very bright and warm weather. While not thephysically largest country, it has the largest hidden village.
The Land of Water
The Land of Water is oriented towards the element of water.Its government leader is the Water Daimyō. It is composed of many islands, witheach having its own unique traditions. The country's weather is typically cooland full of mist and lakes. In some places, like the area where Haku grew up,it is very cold and snows quite a bit.
The Land of Sound
The Land of Sound is a neighbor country of the Landof Fire. It is a relatively new country in the political scene, though it hasexisted for some time under the name of the Land of Rice Fields (田の国,Ta no Kuni; English TV 'Land of Rice Paddies'). Orochimaruconquered the country and convinced its daimyō to let him establish his ownninja village.
The Land of Earth
The Land of Earth (土の国, Tsuchi no Kuni)has seen little attention in the series thus far. It is located north-west ofthe Land of Fire. Its government leader is the Earth Daimyō. The country ismostly comprised of desolate, rocky areas. The border of the Land of Earth runsalong a rocky mountain range, blocking communication with other countries. The wind blowing from thenorth passes over these mountains, carrying small rocks from the Land of Earthto the surrounding countries. This famous natural phenomenon is called'Rock Rain' (岩雨, Gan'u).
The Land of Lightning
The Land of Lightning is located on a peninsulanorth-east of the Land of Fire and is one of the Five Great Countries. Itsgovernment leader is the Lightning Daimyō. In the centre of the country arevast mountain ranges, whose many thunderstorms are said to give the country itsname. From these mountain ranges, many rivers flow to the sea, creating a verycrooked coastline that displays an impressive oceanic beauty. There are manyhot springs located within the country.
The Land of Wind
The Land of Wind is one of the more prominentcountries in the series. It is located to the south-west of the Land of Fireand borders the Land of Rivers and the Land of Rain. Its government leader isthe Wind Daimyō. The country covers a vast realm, but that realm is largelycomposed of deserts. Because there is very little rainfall throughout the year,the people of the country live in villages built on one of the desert's manyoases. Despite the country's extremely harsh environment, it has a largepopulation. Although they have warred with each other in the past, the Land ofWind is on good terms with the Land of Fire, with a great deal of trade goingon between the two countries.
The Land of Waves
The Land of Waves (波の国, Nami no Kuni)is a nation located in an island near the Land of Fire, and it does not have ahidden village, relying on seeking assistance from other Hidden Villages like Konohagakure.
The Land of Iron
The Land of Iron (鉄の国, Tetsu no Kuni)is an icy, snow-covered country. It is politically unusual in that it hasremained neutral and never been involved in the ninja wars. In fact, the shinobihave a rule since long ago that they would not meddle with the land. Despitethis, it is said to have an incredibly strong military which is manned by samurai, insteadof ninja.
The Land of Snow
The Land of Snow was the focus of Naruto theMovie: Ninja Clash in the Land of Snow, in which it had been taken over bya tyrant, Dotō Kazahana, after he killed his brother and predecessor, SōsetsuKazahana. Its hidden village is Yukigakure.
The Land of the Sky
The Land of the Sky is featured in NarutoShippūden 2: Bonds. The country was formed by ninja from several countriesthat could mould their chakra to mist in order to fly. It is said that theyfought in the Second Shinobi World War, and their hidden village was destroyedin the war by Konohagakure for challenging the Five Great Shinobi Countries,but the country itself survived. They apparently have quite the reputation as Tsunadewas terrified that the descendants of the survivors, were attacking Konohagakure.Their civilization appears to be fairly advanced, best demonstrated by theirusage of highly advanced forms of aviation not seen elsewhere in the Five GreatShinobi Countries. They include fliers that use chakra to operate and kunai launchers thatcan fire rapidly along with the ability to drop bombs, and a flying contraptionthat can fire chakra lasers from the sky; due to this powerful and unexpectedair raid, Konohagakure was easily devastated. The Sky ninja's base is a gianttemple named Ancor Vantian (meaning 'Fortress of the Empire'), whichis described as the 'ultimate weapon of destruction'. Shinnō is fromthis village.
Hidden Villages
Hidden Villages are parts of countries in which the country's ninja reside.Their leaders stand equally with the landlords ruling the countries they are apart of. A Hidden Village maintains its economy by training its citizens to beninja from a young age and using them as manpower in various missions otherswould be willing to pay for, from weeding a garden for a single payment toreceiving a constant budget from the country it resides in for being soldiersin case the country is involved in a war.
Amegakure
Amegakure is a small, yet highly industrializedhidden village located in an unnamed country. A number of smaller villages alsosurround Amegakure. As its name suggests, it rains almost constantly due to astorm above the village. Many shinobi from this village seem to wear a kind ofmask that allows them to breathe underwater.
Getsugakure
Getsugakure is a hidden village in the Land of theMoon. A shinobi from this village briefly appears during the Chūnin Exams.
Hoshigakure
Hoshigakure (星隠れの里, Hoshigakure noSato; Literally meaning 'Village Hidden Among Stars') wasintroduced during the Hoshigakure filler arc. It is located in the Land ofBears, and is one of the lesser-known Shinobi Villages in the NarutoUniverse. Hoshigakure was formed sometime after a strange meteorite, which theinhabitants called the 'star,' struck its location 200 years earlier.No trees or plants could grow around the vicinity after it landed.
Ishigakure
Ishigakure is the hidden village of the countrylocated between the Land of Earth and the Land ofWind.
Iwagakure
Iwagakureisthe hidden village of the Land of Earth. As one of the five great ninjavillages, Iwagakure has a Kage as its leader known as the Tsuchikage. Therehave been three Tsuchikage, the most recent being Ōnoki. Iwagakure iswell-known for the rock-hard attitude of its shinobi; as soon as the Tsuchikagegives an order, the Iwa-nin do so without hesitating, even if it means death.Iwagakure ninja seem to specialize in earth release techniques.
Jōmae Village
The Jōmae Village is a village located in the Land ofKeys. This village's ninja are experts in espionage in order to gaininformation for negotiations with larger, more powerful nations.
Kirigakure
Kirigakure (霧隠れの里, Kirigakure no Sato;Literally meaning 'Village Hidden in the Mist') is located in the Landof Water. As one of the five great ninja villages, Kirigakure has a Kage as itsleader known as the Mizukage. There have been five Mizukage, the current onebeing Mei Terumī. An unusually high number of missing-nin seem to originatefrom this village. A unique classification of ninja known as hunter-nin arespecifically tasked with eliminating these defectors.
Konohagakure
Konohagakure is the Hidden Village of the Land ofFire. As one of the five Great Ninja Villages, Konohagakure has a Kage as itsleader known as the Hokage. There have been five Hokage, the most recent being Tsunade.On a mountain overlooking the village from the north exists the Hokage Monument.Although Konoha, much like the country in which it resides, has been relativelypeaceful since the end of the Third Shinobi World War, it remains one of themost powerful villages in existence, and has great military power andinfluence, though this has waned in the past three years following the attacksby Orochimaru and Pain.
Kumogakure
Kumogakure is the Hidden Village of the Land ofLightning. As one of the five Great Ninja Villages, Kumogakure has a Kage asits leader known as the Raikage. There have been four Raikage, the most recentbeing A. Use of lightning release techniques and swords seem to be common ofninja from this village.
Kusagakure
Kusagakure is located in a thus far unnamed country.Because it had Geninparticipatingin the Chūnin exams organized by Konohagakure, it can be assumed the twovillages are allied.
Mount Myōboku
Mount Myōboku, also known as the 'Mountain ofBewilderment' is the land of toads, the place where all the toads that Naruto,Minato and Jiraiya have summoned live. It is home for huge and small toadsalike. Mount Myōboku is a rich and beautiful land, whose ultimate authorityseems to be the Great Toad Sage. Shima and Fukasaku are both elders and sages,and they seem to have an even higher authority than Gamabunta himself.
Otogakure
Otogakure (called Oto for short, was Orochimaru'spersonal village, founded for the express purpose of collecting ninja for hisexperiments and his quest to learn all jutsu. In actuality, Oto is not really avillage, but a group of hideouts and bases scattered throughout the Land ofSound and other countries.
Shimogakure
Shimogakure is the hidden village located in the Landof Frost.
Sunagakure
SunagakureSunagakure is the hiddenvillage of the Land of Wind. As one of the five great ninja villages,Sunagakure has a Kage as its leader known as the Kazekage. There have been fiveKazekage, the most recent being Gaara. The ninja from this village seem tospecialize in Wind Release techniques and the Puppet Technique.
Shinobi from Sunagakure believe that the accomplishment of amission predominates the lives of the ninja trying to accomplish it.
Takigakure
Takigakure (is a village located in an unnamedcountry. In terms of the village's appearance, Takigakure seems to be based onmostly Southeast Asian aesthetics. Their current leader is Shibuki.
Takumi Village
Takumi Village (resides in the small Land of Rivers.It was founded approximately one hundred years ago by a man named Seimei. Takumi is known forits skills in making weaponry, many of which are sold to the ninja villages ofthe world.
Tanigakure
Tanigakure is the hidden village of the Land ofRivers.
Uzushiogakure
Uzushiogakure was the shinobi village of the Land ofWhirlpools. Its ninja were renowned for their fūinjutsuto the point that it led to its destruction in war. The survivors of thevillage's destruction scattered across the globe.
Yugakure
Yugakure is the village that the Akatsuki member Hidanoriginated from. It lies in Land of Hot Water. Once a ninja village, Yugakuredecided that it didn't want to stay a hidden village and transitioned out intoa peaceful and prosperous village instead. However, Hidan, growing up, alreadyshowed a tendency toward violent Jashinist ways, disagreed with this andslaughtered his neighbors before leaving the village.
Yukigakure
Yukigakure is located in the Land of Snow andfeatured in the first Naruto movie. Its ninja apparently specialize inmanipulating preexisting ice.
